East China Normal University Library

East China Normal University Library warmly welcomes donations of books and other materials from faculty members, students, alumni, and members of the wider community. Donated materials may include, but are not limited to, printed books, journals, audiovisual materials, and digital resources. A letter of appreciation will be issued to donors whose materials are accepted into the library’s collection. In accordance with national regulations and considering the library’s collection development policy and storage capacity, all donations are subject to selection and evaluation. Donors are kindly requested to read and understand the following provisions.
I. Materials Eligible for Inclusion
Materials will be included in the library’s collection if they meet all of the following criteria:
1.The content supports ECNU’s teaching and research needs or aligns with the library’s collection policy.
2.The material is a formally published work (non-commercially published materials of significant academic or collection value may be accepted at the library’s discretion).
3.The content is suitable for readers at the university level or above.
4.The material fills a gap in the collection or supplements insufficient copies already held by the library.
II. Materials Not Accepted
Materials with any of the following conditions will not be added to the collection:
1.Those that violate national laws, regulations, or policies.
2.Those that infringe the Copyright Law of the People’s Republic of China.
3.Those damaged beyond usability (materials published before 1949 may be considered on a case-by-case basis).
4.Those containing extensive underlining, annotations, or marginal notes (except for rare or annotated copies of historical or scholarly significance).
5.Those that are outdated, lack academic value, or otherwise do not meet the library’s collection standards.
III. Library Rights Regarding Donated Materials
1.Once the donated materials are received, the library assumes full ownership and disposal rights.
2.Materials not added to the collection will not be returned to the donor.
3.Inclusion in the collection does not guarantee permanent retention or display.
4.The library reserves the right to handle unaccepted or deaccessioned materials at its discretion without prior notice to the donor, while ensuring the best possible use of donated resources.
IV. Handling of Unaccepted or Discarded Materials
1.Materials of reference value but in excess supply, or not suitable for the library’s collection, may be transferred to ECNU faculty, students, or other libraries.
2.Pirated or severely damaged materials will be recycled through approved disposal channels.
V. Additional Provisions
1.Bulk donations of overseas publications must be processed through agencies licensed by national authorities for the import of publications.
2.The recommended number of donated copies is one to three.
3.Donors may deliver books directly to the Collection Development Center of ECNU Library.
4.For mailed donations, please include a clearly written delivery address and contact information to which the donation certificate can be sent. The donation certificate will be mailed to the donor via regular post unless special mailing instructions are specified.
5.For large donations within Shanghai, the Library may arrange on-site pickup.
