    The Reader Services Center is mainly responsible for providing reader services across both the Putuo and Minhang campus libraries, including book borrowing, renewal, reservation, cross-campus borrowing and returning, interlibrary loan, document delivery, and user consultation. It also manages library reading promotion, cultural events, and resource outreach, as well as the preservation and management of the library’s physical collections such as books, CDs, and periodicals. Additionally, the Center oversees the management and operation of library event venues and reading spaces — including exhibition halls, the library cinema(Cinema Paradiso), Starlight Mini Theater, Wang Yuanhua Exhibition Hall, and Liwa Library.

    Serving as a multifunctional service center for teaching, research, learning, promotion, and communication, the Reader Services Center continuously innovates in physical and digital resource services and space management, striving to meet readers’ needs and improve service quality and user satisfaction.

    Main Responsibilities:

    Book Circulation Services

    Circulation management for Chinese and foreign language books and media encompassing borrowing, returning, reservation, renewal, and cross-campus lending and returning services;


    Provision of in-library consultation  and cross-campus retrieval services for reference materials and audiovisual resources;
    Oversight of shelving, reshelving, and stack management for all physical collections.

    Periodicals Reading Services

    Processing and maintenance of  current Chinese and foreign periodicals  including receipt, routing, claims for missing issues, as well as provision of periodical reading services;

    Oversight of binding, inspection, and cataloging of bound and back issues of Chinese and foreign periodicals;
    Management of shelving, organization, and stack maintenance for all periodicals.

    Collection Maintenance

    New book verification, catalog maintenance, and data processing;

    Optimization of library stack layouts, shelving locations, and storage safety management;
    Restoration and repair of damaged books and periodicals;
    Execution of inventory checks, collection weeding, and compensation processing for lost or damaged materials.

    Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery

    Provision of interlibrary loan and document delivery services for readers.

    Space and Equipment Management

    Management of reading areas, research rooms, discussion rooms, study spaces, and leisure zones;

    Oversight of equipment utilization, maintenance, and technical repair;
    Administration of the seat reservation system;
    Management of self-service book pickup lockers and return boxes;
    Participation in equipment research, testing, and assist in procurement.

    Reader Services and Management

    Maintenance of reader data;

    Management of borrowing privileges for non-standard reader accounts;
    Execution of clearance procedures for departing readers and collection of graduate theses and dissertations;
    Resolution of lost book cases;
    Monitoring of  library spaces and readers’ behavior guidance  to ensure compliance with library regulations;
    Implementation of reader service needs surveys, collection of feedback and suggestions, and assistance in formulating or revising service policies.

    Reference and Consultation Services

    Provision of general consultation at the main service desk, including basic service inquiries and guidance on library resource use and searching;

    Referral of specialized queries to appropriate library departments;
    Instructional support for the library equipment utilization including  self-service printing and circulation machines, lockers, e-readers, book sterilizers, reading pavilions, and music listening stations.

    Reader Training

    Participation in library orientation and training sessions for new students.

    Textbook and Teaching Reference Services

    Collection and management of information on teaching reference books; procurement coordination for deficient titles; administration of the  print teaching reference collections;

    Assistance in the development,maintanance  and consultation of electronic teaching reference resources.

    Coordination with Departmental libraries


    Technical guidance for department libraries regarding foreign periodicals binding, bound volume inspection, and their addition to the  collection;

    Operational support for departmental libraries in managing their book lending services;
    Coordination of the allocation and return of departmental library materials.

    Promotion and Outreach Activities

    Planning and implementation of cultural and reading promotion events such as themed book exhibitions, cultural displays, lectures, reading clubs, and film salons;

    Organization of campus-wide events such as Library Theme Days, Orientation Week, Graduation Season, and Reading Carnival.

    New Media Promotion

    Management of new media communications for reading and cultural promotion activities via platforms such as the library website and WeChat;

    Management of digital assets within the online exhibition hall and online lecture hall ;
    Coordination of information dissemination across the library’s multi-floor digital display network.

    Poster and Cultural Product Design and Production

    Design and production of posters for library activities and events;

    Development, design, and production of cultural and creative souvenirs based on the library’s collections.

    Venue Management

    Oversight of management and operation of event venues at both campuses, including exhibition halls, the library cinema, small theater, Wang Yuanhua Exhibition Hall, and Liwa Library.
